Agility Trials & Other Activities

The PSDPC Club holds two agility trials each year, typically in July and December. We often host a silent auction, a photo booth and other fun activities. Come join us! We welcome competitors of all breeds and encourage volunteers and spectators.

We also host many other events such as Meet the Breeds at the Washington State Fair, tracking seminars, scent work competition, Barn Hunt, dock diving, swimming, Powder Photo shoots, and group attendance at Bark at the Park with the Seattle Mariners. We offer the DPCA's Working Aptitude Evaluation every other year.

For club members, we host an annual Health Day which includes an echocardiogram and laboratory work. We also offer our club members rental use of our Holter monitor equipment.

Check our Facebook page for other upcoming events.

Conformation events

We were the first DPCA Chapter club to host both a Judges Education Seminar and an Exhibitors Education Seminar in conjunction with our specialty shows and often provide educational seminars as part of our Specialties. We have sponsored several Breeders Rap Sessions and continue to make outreach an important part of our continuing education.

Dog shows are fun! We encourage everyone to come join us — whether you have a dog you want to show or you just want to learn more about the sport, the PSDPC welcomes you. Competitors are happy to answer any questions and talk about dogs  (but please wait until after they’ve already shown in the ring).

You might just find yourself joining us in the ring one day!

Working Aptitude Evaluations

psdpc wae

As a local chapter of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, we follow the principles of the DPCA to preserve and protect the Doberman Pinscher and to do all possible to bring its natural qualities to perfection.

The perfection we seek is embodied in three sets of characteristics: those of conformation, those of temperament, and those of trainability. This program has, as its fundamental purpose, the recognition of Dobermans having those natural qualities of beauty and functional utility that make the breed what it was intended to be.

In order to earn a Working Aptitude Certificate (WAC), a Doberman must demonstrate the characteristics required of a dog to be a stable companion and resolute protector.

In order to earn a Register of Merit (ROM) award from the DPCA, a Doberman must earn an AKC championship, an approved working title, and pass the Working Aptitude Evaluation. You can learn more about the WAE and download the official Entry Form at the DPCA site here.

NOTE: Active club members earn Health Day stipends for volunteer work at the WAE. Please see Health Day for more details or contact us to learn more.

Tracking

Tracking allows your dog to demonstrate his natural ability to recognize and follow a scent. It’s the perfect way for you and your dog to enjoy many hours together, outside in the fresh air, honing his natural abilities.

PSDPC holds occasional working seminars for Dobermans, which includes:

▪ Field tracking foundation from puppy age to competition

▪ Tracking theory and training plan

▪ Tracking regulations (AKC & FCI)

▪ Field work hands on practice with lots of fun for dog and handler

NOTE: Active club members earn Health Day stipends for volunteer work at the trials. Please see Health Day for more details or contact us to learn more.

Health Day

Active club members only

The lifelong health of our Dobermans and promoting health of our Dobermans is part of our club educational charter: "To encourage and promote the breeding of pure-bred Doberman Pinschers and to do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection" We are also a Chapter Club of the DPCA and with them, actively promote: "… further understanding of the disease, defects, injuries and other ailments that afflict dogs in general and the Doberman Pinscher in particular. "

A yearly Holter and echocardiogram is recommended for all Dobermans over 2 or 3 years of age. The PSDPC Health Day offers the OFA cardiac screening echocardiograms, as well as vaccines, microchipping, health certificates and lab/blood work options. The Total Health Profile bloodwork includes the ProBnP test, an important cardiac marker.

Our Health Days are generally held in December and February of each year. The clinics fill quickly. Please contact the Club for details and review the exam limits, liability and stipend requirements below.

Holter Monitor rental

Our club also offers Holter monitor rentals to all members. It's recommended that all Dobermans over the age of two have annual Holter testing. If you have not had a recent Holter, it's a good idea to test before getting the echocardiogram on Health Day. NOTE: the Club Holter takes approximately one week per person, please plan in advance. Click here to learn more.

Exam limits:

The PSDPC Health Day is intended only as a breed screening exam and does not include diagnostics or follow-up support. Veterinarians in attendance as well as the veterinary technician will only present you with the results of your screening and/or lab results. Time constraints will not allow them to give a medical opinion or treatment options. Any follow-up or additional diagnostics must be with your regular veterinarian or by a separate appointment scheduled with a cardiologist or other specialist.

Liability:

The PSDPC and its representatives reserve the right to refuse service to any individual who fails to abide by the rules of the event or disrespects, misuses or abuses the event volunteers or the event property. Any dog exhibiting any type of aggressive or overly fearful behavior will be immediately removed. In either case no refunds will be issued.

Health Day Subsidies for Active PSDPC Members:

Beginning 2023, the PSDPC Board of Directors voted to maintain the club health day stipend, however it will now be merit based. Subsidies are available for active Club members based on volunteerism or donations to the club for the previous year. Subsidies are $100 to the echocardiogram and $50 to the Total Health Plus Profile.

Each qualified credit earned will equal one subsidy per dog at Health Day. Qualifications for earned credit starts January 1 and ends December 31 of each year, as determined by the Board of Directors and maintained by the Treasurer. The subsidies are non-transferable and must be used in the year earned. You must be an active PSDPC member to receive credit.

A member can earn multiple credits per year however the dog must live with you. You may not use a stipend credit for dogs you co-own but who do not live with you. There is no requirement for length of time as a member nor does membership alone guarantee a stipend.

Club events require volunteer helpers and those people will earn subsidy credit. You must provide a significant contribution to the support of the event, such as a full day of work helping the event run smoothly. Each event committee chair(s) will then provide the Treasurer a list of volunteers for each event. Special circumstances will be given consideration by the board on a case-by-case basis.

The Club Treasurer will keep an annual list of those who have earned credits and provide that info to the Health Day coordinators. They will use that list to apply the stipend on your invoice.

Examples of qualified volunteer positions are:

  • Committee Chair(s) for…
      • Specialty Show / Extravaganza
      • Agility Trial
      • Scent Trial
      • WAE Event
      • Sniff 'n' Go
      • Health Day
  • Volunteer workers at any of the PSDPC Events. Each Event Chair will provide the Treasurer with a list of volunteers to determine the credit available.
  • Newsletter and/or Website
  • Board Executive Committee: President, Secretary, Treasurer

Trophy or other financial donations also qualify for the stipend. For every $100 donated to the Club, you will receive one stipend.

Questions regarding credits you have or how credits are earned should be directed to the Club Treasurer. You will not receive a stipend at the Health Day without approved credit from the Club Treasurer
